The Bourgeois Blues
Here's a great old Lead Belly tune about how unwelcoming Washington D.C. was in the late 30s to people like him and his woman Martha. The wonderful slide is by my pal Brian Litt, whom I've known for years since we sang in a choir together, but only now have we teamed up as a duo. I think there will be more videos from this gig in the coming days.

THis is the first video where I use a new gizmo my sweet wife bought me, something called a Wazinator and that is a rounded triangle of wood with an output jack. It's just a hunk of Electric Floor to be stomped on to provide some foot percussion. No miking needed for the wazinator, just a quarter-inch input to the old mixer. You may behold it in a couple of places in this video. Hey, I have no ...
Twilight Time

In 1944 a trio called the Three Suns recorded an instrumental called Twilight Time. In 1958 the prolific hitmaking songwriter Buck Ram put lyrics to it for the Platters and it became a major hit for them. (The Three Suns had to sue Ram for their writer credits and royalties). The amazing Tony Williams' voice was what powered all the Buck Ram-Platters golden hits: Only You, The Great Pretender, ...
Trombone Cholly 2024

This is, I believe, the second time I've posted this, but after something like 15 years I have a better sense of the song now, maybe. The original (and best, in my book) recording is of Bessie Smith in the early 30s, featuring the slide-y riffs of the real Charlie Green, a trombonist from the Fletcher Henderson band. I knew the song first from Erik Darling's and Hoyt Axton's versions in the ear...

I wasn’t having much success doing this one at first, until I decided to put away the picks and do it in a different style from Lead Belly’s, while still incorporating a bunch of his riffs and the peculiar “five-less” turnaround that you find in every blues he played in E positions. Also his verses, which differ from the standard “you made me love you, now your man has come” lyric. I mentioned ...
Reelin' And Rockin'

Chuck Berry was the only one of the OG's of the earliest Rock And Roll (that would include the pantheon of Carl, Elvis, Jerry Lee, Little Richard, and Fats) to write his own consistently witty, often mordant, original folk poetry story-songs. I consider Mr. Berry to be a direct precursor to Mr. Zimmerman in the following decade in that way. Real American semi-urban folk music. By the way, I don...

Crankin' 'em out! Here's an old Gord fave of mine with just the one guitar but a fair amount of post-effects added. I notice that my favorite old blue sweatshirt is finally getting all threadbare with loose threads dangling from the right cuffs. Oh well, at this age I have a bunch of dangling random threads myself.
Walk On By (2024 version)

Well, I have done two videos of this song in times past, the earlier one a "fantasy video", meaning several me's accompanying me, and one from 2017 with just a solo piano. Both versions are *ridiculously* too fast I don't know what the heck I thought I was doing in 2009 and 2017, but anyway, here's the 2024 one, the New 'n' Way-Improved version. I hope.
I Don't Wanna Grow Up

OK, it’s a Tom Waits song and of course nobody can do Tom like Tom, and I wouldn’t even attempt it. Gotta do it in my own voice, such as it is, lest I sound like the Cookie Monster in a futile attempt to render Tom’s signature growl, his boozy kargyraa, his magnificent barbaric yawp. So here’s my... my bubonic yelp, or something.

Another maestro-piece from Maestro Zimmy. No electronics, just the AKG mike, with a bit of the audio from the pad camera mixed in.

Seemed like time for one on the old keyboard for a change. One of Zimmy's best songs, methinks, but then there are lots of his best songs.
Everything I Own

Before I get to the main thing here, my bad for my getting confused on the penultimate couplet of the lyric; I accidentally said “hold you” in place of “have you” and then failed to make it work by quickly following it with “once again”. Instead, it came out “hold you…back again”. Didn’t exactly mean that. As a governor of Texas once said, “Oops.” Oh crumb, another oops. I just realized I said ...

I feel that it’s time I post something a bit more serious than I’ve been doing lately. What to post? A song unafraid to state uncomfortable truth, yet a song of brave hope and benevolent confidence in our future, yes, a song of joy and strength for our times. So here it is, folks. From 1957. I wasn't even 10 years old yet. In actual seriousness, I loved Bobby Darin throughout his too-short care...

Like all the songs Ray Charles was recording in the late 50s and early 60s, this one was iconic for me as a budding musician. Nobody can sing it like Ray, of course, and his is the version I'm basing my humble attempt on. But I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was a Louis Jordan song first. Anyway, here 'tis by "the little old video-maker, me". That, by the way, is a reference to a TV a...
really great
Really enjoy hearing your music. You two are great together!
Amazing!!
Was amazed to find out some stations wouldn't play this in "63 because it was believed to be a drug song. But you know, if you ponder the lyrics......
Terrific performance, Alonzo. Bravo, friend 👏👏🎸🎸💖💖
Great fun hearing your duo yesterday! You two blend beautifully. Looking forward to more!
Nice! I do like the way you and the 12 string pull off a Leadbelly tune. I must come see you perform Live again.
Excellent.
You guys are great together! Looking forward to hearing more. Thanks!
You made me cry, Thank You
nice
Absolutely Brilliant!
Very nice! 🤗👍
Amazing !
Awesomely and beautifully sang😊
Nice!
Wonderful! You remind me a little bit of Jim Croce. Did you cover some of his songs, too?
Thanks! Haven't yet, but it's a possibility when I get back into production mode.
aug 7 2024 - what tom has done to give this old iconic favorite is simply increadibly refreshing a great tribute she would have been moved by this exellent tom exellent ty !! jeffrey artist victoria bc canada
Well, I think maybe you're conflating me, Alonzo, the performer here, with the late Tom Springfield, who wrote this song more than 50 years ago. But I'll take the compliment, and thank you.
@@alonzogarbanzo i am not confusing you with anyone complimenting you on your version
@@jeffreyfritz8113 Guess I must have read that wrong, it seemed like you were addressing me as Tom. My mistake, and thanks again.

very good,,,that rhyrthm has a great hook to it
Alonzo a great version of this song. I can definitely see your own personal spin in this song and the sound is perfect.
Great... Good job... Congratulations
very,very nice. Thanks for sharing.
Did someone say meta-analog synthesizers? Nice! (But the key change makes it sound like a whole other song to me.)
Excellent!
More !!
Really great.
another great dylan song
Brother Alonzo, that was a masterful perfomance and tribute to the late, great JJ Cale. He is by far the coolest, laid-back and down-to-earth musician that I know of. I was drawn to his music the first time I heard it decades ago and have been a great admirer of his. The world lost a gem when he left the planet.
Thank you for your lovely rendition - I've loved this song since iI was a child. Well done 👏👏👏👏
Your'e great, we enjoy listening your songs, & a great guitarist....
very nice.🤗
Beautiful
One word …Rockin’‼️
Caught me by surprise. Very nice voice and sound...
So nice version this oldies song never Loose ,, it's so great melody en Lyric,,thanks
Outstanding !
Great Job
Great performance!
Love your version ❤️ (I'm an Aussie and very biased) but you do a fantastic job!
Such a classic! It's still beyond me how you created these visuals. Like the cyclops slowly becoming guitars. I always sort of assumed that you just have a supernatural power to directly project your imagination into videos, haha
Oh how it would be quite an experience to sit a learn a few tricks from a master like this fine gentleman.
Cannot find a more highly talented singer then this man. What a gift for all of us.
Alonzo, well done, a great tune for call and response in small jams. Bravo.
Alonzo, a long time fan of you and much much longer for Leadbelly.....great as usual..
Simply love this song, listen to all the covers. Lyrics are phenomenal, but J D is the best. Sometimes cannot get this song out of my head.
Get it Man, thats right been a long time tell you foshour. That was great...........
Wow! Well Done with some deep spirit!
I've enjoyed singing this song for many years. There are many cover versions, but I love Bob's original more than any others. You cover it well though!
